Domains & Hosting

Nameservers

Nameservers: a clear, practical guide from the Digitalx knowledgebase for South African businesses. Part of our Domains & Hosting help.

In short

This guide covers nameservers for South African businesses, in plain language and with the practical detail you actually need. It sits in our knowledgebase on running and growing a South African business, which covers the practical detail that actually matters.

We have written it the way we would explain it to a client on the phone: what it means, what it costs, how long it takes, and where people usually go wrong.

Why this matters for your business

Most owners meet nameservers at an awkward moment, usually when a bank, a client or a deadline forces the issue. Handled early it is straightforward and inexpensive. Left alone it tends to become urgent, and urgent is always more expensive.

There is also a credibility side. Customers, suppliers and lenders read the small signals: whether your company is registered, whether your email is on your own domain, whether your website looks current. These things quietly decide whether people take you seriously.

What hosting actually does

Hosting is the server your website files live on and the service that delivers them to visitors. It also usually runs your professional email. Cheap hosting shows up as slow pages, downtime and support that never replies.

  • Speed. South African visitors on mobile data notice a slow site immediately, and Google factors it into rankings.
  • Uptime. A site that is down during business hours costs real enquiries.
  • SSL. The padlock. Without it browsers warn visitors away.
  • Backups. Daily, and tested. Untested backups are just hope.
  • Email. Professional addresses on your own domain, included.
  • Support. A number that a person answers.

What we include

Our hosting starts at R150 a month and includes SSL, business email, daily backups and monitoring. On a Website Care Plan from R350 a month we also handle updates, security monitoring and minor content changes, so nothing is left to rot.

DNS and propagation, without the jargon

DNS is the internet's address book. It maps your domain name to the servers that hold your website and your email. When you change hosting, you are updating that address book entry.

SettingValue
A recordPoints your domain at the server IP address that serves your website
CNAMEPoints a subdomain, such as www, at another name
MX recordTells the world which server handles email for your domain
TXT recordHolds verification and security records such as SPF and DKIM
NameserversThe top level setting that decides who controls all the records above

Why changes take time

Internet providers cache DNS answers to keep things fast. When you change a record, providers keep serving the old answer until their cache expires. That is propagation.

  • Most changes are live within one to four hours.
  • Some networks can take up to 48 hours in the worst case.
  • During that window some people see the new site and some see the old one. This is normal and not a fault.
  • Lowering the TTL value a day before a planned move shortens the delay.
  • Never delete the old hosting until propagation is fully complete, or you will lose mail.

What to get right

  • Start with the outcome you want, then work backwards
  • Get the compliance basics right early, because they are cheap to do and expensive to fix
  • Put real prices and clear information in front of customers
  • Measure the things that lead to money, not vanity numbers
  • Ask for help before a small problem becomes an expensive one

Work down that list in order. Each item makes the next one easier, and skipping ahead is what creates the messy situations we are usually called in to untangle.

How this usually works in practice

  1. Start with the goal. Write down what you want to be true in three months. Almost every decision about nameservers follows from that.
  2. Check what you already have. Existing registrations, domains, hosting logins and accounts. People often own more than they realise, and duplicating it wastes money.
  3. Get a written price before committing. A verbal figure is not a quote. Ask for scope and cost in writing.
  4. Do the compliance part first. Registration and tax basics unlock the bank account, the contracts and the tenders.
  5. Then build the visible part. Website, professional email, listings and branding.
  6. Only then spend on advertising. Sending paid traffic to a weak website is the most common way South African businesses waste a marketing budget.

Costs and timelines, honestly

Exact figures depend on your situation, but here is the shape of it so you can plan.

WhatTypical cost and timeline
Company registrationFrom R990, usually 3 to 7 working days
Starter websiteFrom R3,990, usually 1 to 2 weeks
Hosting, SSL and business emailFrom R150 per month
Website care and updatesFrom R350 per month
SEOFrom R2,500 per month, meaningful movement from about month three
Google Ads managementFrom R2,500 per month plus your ad spend
Branded motorbike advertisingFrom R2,500 per month per bike

Every one of these prices is published on our pricing page, and you can build your own total in the quote builder without speaking to anyone.

Mistakes we see every week

  • Missing the annual return. CIPC deregisters companies for this, and it takes weeks and money to reverse. Diarise it.
  • Not owning the domain. If a previous developer registered it in their own name, you do not control your own website or email. Always check who the registrant is.
  • Using a free email address on invoices. It costs you credibility on every quote you send.
  • Paying for ads before the website converts. Fix the destination first, or you are paying to lose people.
  • No written scope. Almost every dispute we hear about started with a verbal agreement about what was included.
  • Letting the mailbox fill up. A full mailbox stops receiving mail silently, and people assume clients are ignoring them.
